RBNZ Sees Uneven Recovery Amid Fuel Price Driven Inflation
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) has released its latest monetary policy statement, outlining the current state of the country's economy. The key driver behind recent inflation is higher fuel prices resulting from the conflict in the Middle East, pushing the annual rate to 4.1 percent in the June quarter.
Despite this increase, core inflation and expected wage growth remain consistent with the target band of 1-3 percent by mid-2027 and a 2 percent midpoint later next year. The economic recovery is ongoing but remains uneven, with resilient demand from trading partners and strong export prices supporting income growth in certain sectors.
A notable contrast exists between regional New Zealand and major cities like Auckland and Wellington, where weak income growth, job insecurity, and flat house prices weigh heavily on household spending and residential investment. The RBNZ committee expects the recovery to strengthen and broaden over time.
