RBNZ Set to Hike Interest Rates to 2.75% in September
UOB Global Economics & Markets Research is revising its expectations for the Reserve Bank of New Zealand to raise the Official Cash Rate (OCR) to 2.75% in September, up from a previous forecast of no change at 2.50%. The decision reflects persistent inflation at 4.1%, broad price increases, and hawkish guidance despite a soft labour market.
The bank's shift towards pre-emptive tightening is driven by the RBNZ's earlier guidance that 'some further reduction in monetary stimulus is likely to be required.' UOB notes that delivering another 25bps hike now would reinforce the Bank's inflation-fighting credentials while maintaining flexibility for future meetings. The decision is seen as a continuation of the RBNZ's gradual normalisation process.
UOB still anticipates only gradual further tightening, with policy remaining data dependent. The bank views the move as a response to the combination of headline inflation remaining above the RBNZ's 1-3% target range and continued concerns about inflation persistence.
