RBNZ Tightens Scrutiny on Lenders and Insurers
New Zealand's Reserve Bank is signaling tighter scrutiny for lenders and insurers as it prioritizes financial stability. In his first address to industry since his appointment, Assistant Governor Angus McGregor emphasized that maintaining a stable financial system is crucial for New Zealand's economic wellbeing.
McGregor outlined three key priorities: maintaining a fit-for-purpose regulatory regime, taking a forward-looking view of emerging risks, and sustaining constructive relationships with industry. The Reserve Bank is currently implementing the Deposit Takers Act, which will bring deposit takers under a more consistent framework and introduce the Depositor Compensation Scheme.
The RBNZ has also eased capital requirements for banks and non-bank deposit takers, which could lead to increased lending and reduced rates for New Zealanders. Additionally, the Reserve Bank is reviewing the Insurance (Prudential Supervision) Act and preparing to publish an issues paper on payments modernisation.
