Record European Heatwaves Fuel Inflation Fears

Europe's record-breaking temperatures are putting pressure on food prices, supply chains, and heavily indebted economies. The continent is facing bottlenecks in its major waterways, including the Rhine river, which carried around 285 million metric tons of freight last year.

Nomura senior European economist Andrzej Szczepaniak monitors water levels at Kaub, one of the shallowest points on the Rhine, daily. The disruption is adding to inflationary pressures as heatwaves and droughts hit agriculture, raising concerns about food supplies and prices.

Invesco global market strategist Paul Jackson said, 'We are definitely going to notice food price inflation.' He cited the additional impact of the El Nino weather pattern, which is expected to intensify food inflation pressures globally. Markets are pricing in at least one more ECB interest-rate increase by year-end.
