The Malaysian ringgit closed slightly lower on Monday against the US dollar due to strong non-farm payrolls data from the United States.

The US jobs report showed a gain of 162,000 in August, far exceeding the consensus forecast of 55,000.

Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid noted that the market is awaiting the US consumer price index (CPI) report due on Friday, which will influence market sentiment ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee's next meeting on September 15-16.
