Ringgit Opens Stronger Ahead of Jackson Hole Symposium
The Malaysian ringgit has opened stronger against the US dollar, following cautious sentiment ahead of the annual Jackson Hole Symposium. The symposium is a significant event for global financial markets, where policymakers and economists gather to discuss key economic issues.
According to Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid, chief economist at Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd, market participants are waiting with bated breath for signals from the United States Federal Reserve (US Fed) officials. 'The focus today will be on what US Fed chair Kevin Warsh would describe the prevailing economy and market conditions during the Jackson Hole Symposium,' he said.
The ringgit has risen to 4.0255/0345 against the greenback from Thursday's close of 4.0305/0350, indicating a slight improvement in its value. However, Dr Afzanizam expects the ringgit to stay within a narrow range today due to the cautious sentiment.
The local currency has also traded higher against other major currencies, such as the euro and the Japanese yen, but fell vis-a-vis the British pound.
