Ringgit Rides High on Stronger Than Expected GDP Growth
The ringgit has started the day on a high note against the US dollar, following Malaysia's stronger-than-expected second quarter GDP growth of 6.0 percent.
At 8 am, the local currency had strengthened to 4.0830/0890 against the greenback from Friday's close of 4.0840/0885.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam attributed the Malaysian economy's resilience and ability to surprise on the upside to the latest GDP data, saying that the ringgit would 'linger around RM4.07 to RM4.09 today.'
However, geopolitical risks continue to exert upward pressure on crude oil prices, keeping the ringgit in a tight range against the greenback.
