Rising Mortgagee Listings and Higher Interest Rates Fuel Homeowner Stress
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand's latest decision to raise interest rates has added to the financial stress faced by many homeowners. According to realestate.co.nz, mortgagee listings have increased by 34% in the first eight months of this year compared to the same period last year. This is on top of a 35% increase in 2025.
With interest rates now at 2.75%, many borrowers are facing higher monthly repayments. A household with a $700,000 mortgage could see an additional $14,000 per year in interest payments, or around $1,167 per month.
The Reserve Bank has warned that inflation is still above target and may need to increase further. This would put even more pressure on households already struggling to make ends meet.
