Rocket Lab Surpasses SpaceX and Blue Origin with $8 Billion Acquisition
Rocket Lab, founded by Peter Beck in 2006, has grown from a small startup into one of the world's leading space companies. Despite being rejected by NASA and Boeing due to lacking a formal engineering degree, Beck did not give up on his dream and built Rocket Lab instead. The company has successfully launched over 50 missions with its Electron rocket, which is now the most frequently launched dedicated small satellite rocket in the world.
Rocket Lab's revenue reached $600 million in 2025, employing between 2,000 and 2,500 people across the United States, Canada, and New Zealand. The company became publicly traded through a SPAC merger in 2021, valued at about $4.1 billion. By acquiring satellite communications company Iridium for $8 billion, Rocket Lab has expanded its services to include satellite and space infrastructure.
Rocket Lab's acquisition of Iridium will provide the company with access to an existing satellite network, worldwide communications system, and valuable radio spectrum. According to CEO Peter Beck, building these assets from scratch would have taken many years and cost billions of dollars. Rocket Lab is now competing directly with SpaceX and Blue Origin in the satellite internet market.
