Romania Still Lacking Key Criteria for Eurozone Membership
The National Bank of Romania's governor, Mugur Isarescu, has stated that the country does not currently meet any of the criteria necessary for adopting the euro. This assessment was made in a report on inflation presented to Digi 24 TV and BTA. Isarescu emphasized that fiscal adjustment and reducing the budget deficit below 3 percent are Romania's main priorities at this time.
He also expressed doubt about setting a realistic timetable for accession to the eurozone, predicting that it may take 'a few good years' and likely not before the 2028 elections. Isarescu highlighted that adopting the euro is not a simple process but rather a complex political and social one requiring stability in fundamental economic indicators.
The governor recalled Romania's preparations for transitioning to the single European currency, which were interrupted in 2018. He reiterated that abandoning the commitment to adopting the euro would be impossible due to the Treaty of Accession to the European Union.
