Romania Targets Euro Adoption by 2032 Amid Fiscal Consolidation Efforts
Romania may aim to adopt the euro by 2032, according to Dragos Pislaru, the provisional minister for Investments and European Projects. He noted that adopting the European currency depends on fiscal-budget consolidation, a coherent development plan, and political stability.
The passage to the euro can be done by observing certain indicators, such as budget deficit, public debt, and other criteria needed to adopt the euro, Pislaru explained. The aim is for Romania's finances to be in order by 2030, but there is also a possibility of aligning fiscal-budget consolidation with a development plan for 2028-2034.
Currently, Romania does not participate in the ERM II mechanism, considered the anteroom to the euro. The Convergence report for 2026, released by the European Commission, shows that none of the five analyzed states fulfill all conditions needed to adopt the euro.
