Romania's path to adopting the euro remains uncertain, according to National Bank of Romania Governor Mugur Isarescu. Speaking on Thursday, Isarescu stated that the country currently meets none of the necessary criteria for switching to the single currency.

The BNR has been preparing for euro adoption since 2011, but progress stalled in 2018 due to unfavorable external circumstances, including the Greek crisis and Eurozone crisis. Although Romania met the required criteria in 2014, it failed to sustain them, leading to a large deficit.

Isarescu emphasized that adopting the euro is not simply a matter of exchanging one currency for another but involves complex political and social processes that require careful planning and coordination among government agencies.
