Rupee Direction Hinges on RBI Intervention as Oil Prices and Fed Rate Expectations Loom
The Indian rupee's direction this week will be influenced by whether the Reserve Bank of India sustains its dollar-selling intervention. The RBI has been actively managing the currency, and its actions have kept it insulated from negative cues.
Oil prices and U.S. interest rate expectations are also key global factors for currency and bond markets. A higher probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike at this month's meeting is expected due to robust U.S. jobs data.
The RBI will conduct a 30-day variable rate reverse repo auction worth 7 trillion rupees on Monday, aiming to encourage banks to park excess funds while retaining flexibility to withdraw them. Shorter-duration bonds have remained supported, but the swelling surplus has raised expectations that the RBI may need to take durable steps to withdraw cash from the system.
