Rupee Falls as Brent Crude Prices Near $97 and Geopolitical Tensions Rise
The Indian rupee depreciated by 10 paise to 94.66 against the US dollar in early trade on September 8, 2026. The decline comes as Brent crude prices surged near $97 per barrel and West Asian geopolitical tensions weighed on investor confidence.
Despite heavy external pressures, ongoing RBI dollar sales and strong foreign-currency inflows under special schemes helped keep the rupee range-bound. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 94.49 against the US dollar before touching 94.66, a fall of 10 paise from its previous close.
Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury and executive director at Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP, noted that the RBI's intervention has been crucial in preventing higher oil prices from translating into a weaker rupee. He predicted that the rupee will stay within a range of 94.00 to 94.75 due to crude oil prices near $97 and the dollar index falling to 98.74.
