Rupiah Gains Strength Amid Reserve Boost
The Indonesian rupiah has strengthened to Rp17,632 against the US dollar as of September 8, thanks to an increase in foreign exchange reserves. The central bank's data shows that Indonesia's foreign exchange reserves rose to $146.5 billion at the end of August, a $1.2 billion jump from the previous month.
This boost has helped support the rupiah despite ongoing external pressures, such as heightened tensions between the US and Iran over oil and gas infrastructure in the Gulf. Traze Andalan Futures Director Ibrahim Assuaibi notes that the Strait of Hormuz remains a key focus for the oil market, with concerns about tighter maritime monitoring potentially slowing tanker traffic.
The upcoming release of US inflation data on Wednesday and Thursday will also be closely watched, as it may provide clues to the Federal Reserve's interest-rate outlook. In the meantime, Indonesia's foreign exchange reserves continue to serve as a stabilizing force for the rupiah.
