Rupiah Hits Four-Month High as Dollar Eases
The Indonesian rupiah has hit its strongest level since mid-May, briefly trading around 17,535 per US dollar. This comes as the dollar eases and emerging Asian currencies see a boost in demand.
The move is part of a broader pattern where investors rotate back into emerging-market assets when the dollar cools down. However, this week's backdrop is complex, with oil prices higher and traders waiting for US inflation data that could impact expectations for US interest rates and the dollar's direction.
Fakhrul Fulvian, chief economist at Trimegah Securities, attributes the rupiah's bounce to a friendlier global setup. However, he notes that Indonesia still needs about $11 billion in sustained foreign inflows to keep its external balance comfortable.
