Rupiah Hits New Low Ahead of US Inflation Data and BI Policy Meeting
The Indonesian rupiah has continued its decline, hovering near IDR 17,870 per US dollar on Wednesday. This weakness is partly due to a higher dollar index ahead of US inflation data that could influence expectations for the Federal Reserve's next policy move.
Weaker fundamentals in Indonesia have also weighed on sentiment, with retail sales and consumer mood remaining subdued in July. Meanwhile, contained inflation has provided some room for policy flexibility, as Indonesia's inflation rate hit a three-month low of 2.88% in July within the central bank's target band.
The Bank of Indonesia is set to hold its next policy meeting next week, which will be its first since Perry Warjiyo stepped down last month. Acting Governor Destry Damayanti has been nominated as the sole candidate to lead the central bank, and her appointment is expected to be approved smoothly after Independence Day celebrations.
