Rupiah Sinks Amid US-Iran Tensions and Tightening Monetary Policy
The Indonesian rupiah weakened against the US dollar on Monday due to renewed tensions between Washington and Tehran, as well as expectations of tighter US monetary policy. The rupiah closed at Rp 17,722 per US dollar, down 29 points or 0.16% from its previous close.
Traze Andalan Futures Director Ibrahim Assuaibi stated that the escalating tensions between the US and Iran made markets increasingly cautious. This caution led to a decline in risk-taking behavior, which negatively impacted the rupiah's value.
The Fed's interest rate hike expectations also contributed to the rupiah's weakness. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh emphasized at the Jackson Hole Symposium that restoring price stability was the central bank's main priority, sparking speculation about another interest rate increase in September.
