Rupiah Slumps on Dollar Strength and Jakarta Protests
The Indonesian rupiah has been under pressure in recent days, hovering around IDR 17,750 per U.S. dollar as stronger U.S. economic data boosts the dollar index.
This has dampened hopes for near-term Federal Reserve easing and left investors cautious about potential unrest related to ongoing protests in Jakarta.
The protests, which began today, are reminiscent of last year's turmoil, causing concerns about higher food prices due to El Niño-related weather risks and July trade figures that highlighted global energy market pressures.
However, remarks from Destry Damayanti, the nominee for Bank Indonesia governor, offered some reassurance by emphasizing closer policy coordination without compromising the central bank's independence and a continued focus on stability while supporting growth.
