Rupiah Soars to Fresh Highs as Dollar Index Slides Amid Yen Rally
The Indonesian rupiah (IDR) gained strength for the second consecutive session on Thursday, trading below IDR 17,700 per U.S. dollar as the dollar index continued its decline.
This strengthening was driven by a sharp yen rally in response to speculation of Japanese intervention following a rate check. The greenback was under pressure from this development.
Domestically, the appointment of Destry Damayanti as Bank Indonesia's first female governor has been seen as a positive move, with her pledge to implement responsive policies that balance stability and growth.
The new governor raised the 2027 growth outlook to 5.2%-6%, marking the strongest pace since 2012, amidst a narrow trade surplus in July. This was supported by stronger non-oil and gas exports offsetting a surge in imports, particularly fuel.
