Rupiah Volatility Persists Amid Uncertainty Over BI Leadership
The Indonesian rupiah (IDR) has been under strain due to policy uncertainty following the sudden exit of Perry Warjiyo as central bank governor. The local currency hovered around IDR 18,090 per US dollar on Wednesday.
Local reports suggested that Warjiyo's departure followed a major dispute with the finance minister over growth strategies, although it remains unclear whether this disagreement directly triggered his exit. The president's spokesperson denied speculation of government pressure.
Economists expect a permanent appointment for the new chief within the next two months, but markets are likely to remain cautious until the successor is formally named. Bank Indonesia has raised rates by a cumulative 100bps since May to support the currency and attract foreign inflows.
