Rustenburg Shutdown Boosts Platinum Prices Amid Safety Concerns
Platinum prices have surged by over 6% in recent trading, as the precious metal benefits from a rebound in gold and a weakening US dollar. The price increase comes after Impala Platinum (Implats) temporarily suspended mining operations at its flagship Rustenburg complex in South Africa due to safety concerns. The shutdown, which lasted from July 24 to July 28, was prompted by six worker fatalities over the past year, including two deaths this month.
Rustenburg is Implats' largest operation, employing approximately 51,500 people and accounting for nearly half of the company's total platinum-group metals (PGM) production. The complex is expected to produce between 1.67-1.76 million PGM ounces in FY2026. During the shutdown, the company conducted workplace inspections, safety audits, additional employee training, and a review of critical safety procedures with the support of independent specialists.
Impats' decision to halt production at Rustenburg highlights the operational challenges faced by South Africa's deep-level mining industry, which is considered one of the most technically demanding in the world. The company estimates that the shutdown will reduce production by approximately eight days during FY2027.
