S&P 500 Nears Record High Amid Pre-Fed Jitters

The S&P 500 index is nearing its all-time high as investors wait for key data releases that could impact the Federal Reserve's rate decision. Jay Woods, an expert at Freedom Capital Markets, warns that this week may set the tone for the rest of 2026.

Woods notes that unemployment data showed good news for the economy but not necessarily great news for those who want lower rates. The S&P 500 index is currently at $770.19, just shy of its all-time high of $779.37 set on August 13.

The Producer Price Index (PPI) and Consumer Price Index (CPI) data releases this week are crucial for the Fed's decision. Woods says that a higher PPI reading could indicate a potential push for a September rate hike. The real focus will be on core CPI, which strips away volatile food and energy prices and provides a cleaner look at the underlying inflation trend.

The market expert remains cautious due to higher energy prices, rising yields, and seasonal headwinds cited. Woods also notes that there are no major earnings results over the next few weeks, making it harder for the market to go higher.
