Schmid Sees Higher Rates Needed to Tame Persistent Inflation
Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City President Jeff Schmid believes that tighter monetary policy is necessary to combat inflation, which has been above the Fed's target rate for over five years. According to Schmid, higher interest rates are required to achieve price stability, despite policymakers being divided on how much action is needed.
The current benchmark rate remains unchanged after a recent vote, but three Fed officials dissented in favor of a quarter-point increase. These dissenting voices cited concerns that delaying hikes now could lead to more aggressive action later. Schmid himself emphasized the need for caution, warning against assuming that inflation pressures stemming from supply shocks will be fleeting.
In particular, Schmid highlighted the risks associated with strong demand and investment in artificial intelligence, which he believes can exacerbate price increases when combined with supply chain disruptions.
