Schnabel Eyes IMF Role as ECB Board Reshuffle Looms
Isabel Schnabel, a European Central Bank board member and head of market operations, is in talks to leave her position early to take on a senior role at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). According to German newspaper Handelsblatt, citing government sources, Schnabel may depart before her term ends in 2027. She has been in discussions for the vacant position as head of the IMF's Monetary and Capital Markets Department.
The potential departure would bring forward a reshuffle of the ECB's board, where top positions are set to be turned over quickly. Chief economist Philip Lane is due to leave next May, while President Christine Lagarde's term ends in October 2024. Schnabel's own exit would effectively end her bid for the ECB presidency.
The IMF declined to comment on the matter, and an ECB spokesperson also remained silent. The developments raise questions about who will claim the vacant roles, with major eurozone countries like Germany, France, and Spain likely vying for positions. However, there is also speculation that former Dutch central bank chief Klaas Knot could replace Lagarde as president.
