Schnabel Eyes IMF Role as ECB Reshuffle Looms
Isabel Schnabel, a board member of the European Central Bank (ECB), is reportedly in talks to leave early for a senior role at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). According to German newspaper Handelsblatt, Schnabel may become the head of the IMF's Monetary and Capital Markets Department, a position that has been vacant since Tobias Adrian left.
Schnabel's term at the ECB runs until the end of 2027. If she departs early, it would bring forward the start of a reshuffle of the central bank's board, which is expected to be completed by next year. Chief economist Philip Lane is set to leave in May, while President Christine Lagarde's term will end in October.
The potential departure of Schnabel and Lagarde could have significant implications for the ECB. Spain has expressed interest in claiming a seat on the board, which could lead to a division of roles among the biggest eurozone economies. However, if leaders decide to pick former Dutch central bank chief Klaas Knot to replace Lagarde, it could upset these plans.
