The European Central Bank's (ECB) Isabel Schnabel may leave her position earlier than planned to take on a role at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), according to a report by Handelsblatt.

Citing government and finance sources, the newspaper stated that Schnabel's term as executive board member is set to end in 2027. However, if she were to depart early, Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel would be the sole German candidate remaining for the position of succeeding Christine Lagarde.

The ECB has declined to comment on the matter.
