Schnabel Weighs IMF Offer Amid ECB Leadership Shuffle
Isabel Schnabel, German representative on the ECB's Executive Committee, is reportedly considering leaving her position in the coming months. According to the Handelsblatt newspaper, she is being considered for a high-profile role at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as director of markets.
This potential move would lead to significant changes at the top of the European Central Bank (ECB), particularly if Christine Lagarde, the current president, also leaves before her term ends in late 2027. Lagarde has hinted that she might depart early but has not specified where she will go next, suggesting a possible return to French politics or a role with the World Economic Forum.
Schnabel's eventual departure would rule out any possibility of her becoming the ECB's president, despite being mentioned as one of five potential candidates by the Official Forum of Monetary and Financial Institutions (OMFIF). Pablo Hernández de Cos, a Spaniard currently leading the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), is also on that list and was considered best prepared according to an OMFIF survey.
