Schnabel's IMF Bid Sparks Speculation Over Early Departure from ECB

Isabel Schnabel, a European Central Bank board member and head of market operations, is in talks to join the International Monetary Fund as head of its Monetary and Capital Markets Department. The role has been vacant since August, when Tobias Adrian left.

Schnabel's term at the ECB runs until 2027, but she may leave early if she takes on the IMF position. If that happens, it would bring forward a reshuffle of the ECB board, which is expected to occur in quick succession.

Philip Lane, the ECB's chief economist, is set to leave next May, and Christine Lagarde, the ECB president, will see her term end next October. Schnabel's departure would also essentially rule out her bid to become the ECB's next president.
