Scotiabank's third-quarter results have been hailed as a record by its chief executive, Scott Thomson. The Bank of Nova Scotia reported net income of $2.95 billion, up from $2.53 billion in the same period last year, with diluted EPS of $2.27 versus $1.84.

Adjusted net income was $2.97 billion and adjusted diluted EPS was $2.28, beating analyst expectations of about $2.10. All business lines contributed to the improvement, with return on equity clearing a key medium-term target ahead of schedule.

The bank's Canadian Banking segment saw segment return on equity rise to 19.4%, while Global Wealth Management net income reached $515 million and Global Banking and Markets climbed to about $647 million.

With the Bank of Canada holding its policy rate at 2.25%, Scotiabank's large international footprint gives it exposure to economic conditions beyond Canada, which can be both a diversifier and a source of volatility.
