Shafik Exits as UK Chief Economic Advisor Amid Leadership Change
Minouche Shafik has left her position as chief economic advisor to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, according to Bloomberg News. This departure comes after Andy Burnham took office on July 20, 2026, and chose not to keep Shafik in the role.
Shafik had been serving as Chief Economic Advisor since September 1, 2025, under former Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Her distinguished career includes roles such as deputy governor of the Bank of England, IMF deputy managing director, LSE president, and Columbia University president.
The report from Bloomberg News cited people familiar with the matter but Reuters could not immediately verify the information. Downing Street was also unable to comment on Shafik's departure at the time of publication.
