SK Hynix Listing Boosts South Korean Won Amid Record-Breaking US Offering
SK Hynix's decision to list its American depositary receipts (ADRs) on Nasdaq has had an unexpected impact on South Korea's currency market. The company raised $26.5 billion by pricing its ADRs at $149 each, with demand exceeding seven times the number of shares available.
The influx of foreign currency from this offering has strengthened the South Korean won against the US dollar, pushing the exchange rate to a low 1,470-won range. This means that fewer won are needed to purchase one US dollar, indicating an increase in the value of the South Korean currency.
SK Hynix plans to use part of the funds raised from its offering to finance semiconductor factories and manufacturing equipment in South Korea. To do this, it will convert some of the dollars into Korean won, increasing the supply of dollars in the market while boosting demand for the won.
