SK Hynix Listing Triggers 6% Korean Won Surge, Shifts Market Dynamics
South Korea's currency, the Korean won, rebounded by approximately 6% against the U.S. dollar in July, making it Asia's best-performing currency.
The sudden appreciation was largely driven by SK Hynix's record-breaking U.S. listing, which raised $26.5 billion and prompted a surge of dollar sales from major domestic exporters.
According to Bank of Korea data, net dollar forward sales by South Korean importers and exporters reached $17.4 billion in the second quarter, the highest level in 18 years.
Market observers noted that SK Hynix's substantial dollar sales directly fueled the strengthening of the won, with other companies such as Hanwha Ocean selling approximately $2 billion worth of dollar forward contracts and signaling their intention to further increase dollar sales.
Stephen Lee, an economist at Meritz Securities, stated, 'Hynix's dollar sales have triggered a ripple effect, evolving into a broader wave of corporate dollar selling.'
