Small-Cap Stocks at Generational Discounts Amid Market Uncertainties
Australian small-cap stocks are being overlooked by investors due to ongoing market uncertainties and elevated interest rates, but Luke Laretive, portfolio manager of Seneca's Australian small companies fund, sees this as a generational buying opportunity.
Laretive points out that the pain for the small-cap segment has largely been absorbed by earlier Reserve Bank of Australia interest rate hikes, leaving many ASX-listed small stocks deeply discounted. This is evident in the significant valuation disparity between the S&P/ASX 50 Index and the ASX Small Ordinaries Index, with the latter trading at roughly 16 times earnings and offering 23% earnings growth.
The fund's strategy involves identifying potential takeover targets, which has contributed to its strong performance. Recent successes include MMA Offshore and mineral explorers such as Maronan Metals, which recently received a $22 million investment from Kinterra Capital that could signal a full takeover bid.
