SNB Announces New Banknote Series with Mountainous Theme
The Swiss National Bank (SNB) is planning to introduce new banknotes by 2030, starting a design competition for the tenth series of Swiss currency. The theme of the new banknotes will be 'Switzerland and Its High Altitudes,' highlighting the country's unique topography.
The new designs will feature different regions of Switzerland: the lowlands on the 10-franc note, the Swiss Plateau on the 20-franc note, the Jura Mountains on the 50-franc note, the Pre-Alps on the 100-franc note, and high mountains on the 200-franc note. The 1,000-franc note will feature high mountains.
The SNB expects costs for developing the new banknotes to be in the mid double-digit millions range, but has not provided exact figures. According to Martin Schlegel, President of the SNB Governing Board, 'cash is an integral part of Swiss life and will remain a popular means of payment.'
