Sony, TSMC Pledge $10 Billion for Next-Gen Sensor Venture
Sony Group and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) have formed a joint venture to produce next-generation image sensors, investing approximately 1 trillion yen in the project.
The two companies plan to manufacture the advanced sensors at a semiconductor plant in Kumamoto Prefecture, with mass production scheduled to begin in 2029.
The joint venture will be funded 60% by Sony and 40% by TSMC. Including subsidies currently under discussion with the Japanese government, the overall investment is expected to total around 1 trillion yen.
