South Australia Launches AI Royal Commission to Guide State Policy
The South Australian government is taking proactive steps to understand and regulate artificial intelligence (AI) in the state. Premier Peter Malinauskas announced the launch of a royal commission on August 10, which will begin its work in October 2026 and submit its final report by July 1, 2027.
The estimated cost of the commission's work is approximately $3 million Australian dollars, according to The Advertiser. The commission will consist of three experts with diverse backgrounds, including cutting-edge AI technologies, labor and employment issues, and economics and business.
The focus of the commission will be on the economy, education, and healthcare, examining the impact of AI on these sectors and evaluating existing approaches to regulating the technology. The government aims to take advantage of AI opportunities while ensuring they are used in the public interest.
