South Island Chambers Unite to Boost Regional Economy
The South Island of New Zealand is calling for more investment to boost its economy and move ahead of the national average. The region's eight chambers of commerce have launched a joint election manifesto, 'Growing New Zealand from the South: A Policy Platform for Election 2026,' which highlights their $100 billion contribution to the economy.
The manifesto aims to address the regional disparity between the South Island and other parts of the country. Business Canterbury CEO Leeann Watson emphasized that the region wants to move ahead, not just keep up with the national average.
The chambers are calling for support from the next government to drive economic growth in the South Island. This includes investments in infrastructure, education, and innovation, which they believe will create jobs and stimulate local economies.
