Southeast Economy Expands Amid Income Divide
The Southeast economy continued to expand in late summer, but the pace of growth varied widely depending on income level. While affluent households maintained their spending habits, those with more modest means turned cautious due to rising living costs.
According to a recent Beige Book report from the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, low- and moderate-income groups intensified financial strain during the summer. Many individuals and families resorted to debt, including credit cards, payday loans, and 'buy now, pay later' plans, to cover essential expenses.
On the other hand, consumer spending grew modestly due to strong activity in the luxury segment. Demand for high-end dining and experiences remained robust, but retailers reported that consumers overall sought value at lower prices by buying store brands instead of name-brand products.
Tourism activity also grew modestly, but with a focus on expensive properties. Midrange travel segments experienced declines in both leisure and business travel spending.
