Southern Orcas Make Strong Case for NRL's 20th Franchise

The Southern Orcas, a rugby league team based in Christchurch, New Zealand, is making a strong case to become the NRL's 20th franchise. The team has been building its pathways and development programs, including the Educational Sports Program (ESP) Trust, which has shown impressive results.

According to Southern Orcas managing director Andrew Chalmers, the ESP Trust has had 171 young players go through the program since its inception in 2020. Of those, 69 have signed pathways or development contracts with NRL clubs, and 29 of them have joined the Warriors. The trust has also made significant strides in developing women's rugby league talent.

The Orcas are capitalizing on the success of the New Zealand Warriors, who have dominated the sporting landscape in recent years. With a population of over 5 million and a rapidly growing economy, New Zealand is seen as a prime market for the NRL. The TV rights deal signed by the NRL in 2028 includes the introduction of a 20th team as early as 2029.

The Orcas have already held face-to-face meetings with the NRL to explore the possibility of joining the competition. With the NRL considering a fifth Queensland team for the 2032 Olympics, the timing is right for the Orcas to make their move.
