Spanish ATMs Trap Brits with Second Screen
British tourists visiting Spain are being caught out by a new trap at cash machines. After selecting euros as their local currency, a second confirmation screen appears asking if they accept or reject the conversion rate.
The wording of this screen is designed to confuse people into accepting the machine's poorer exchange rate, which can cost several per cent more than what their UK bank or card network would apply.
Many tourists have reported falling for this trap, including those who have been visiting Spain regularly. One traveller described selecting 'reject' only to receive the cash anyway, proving that the machine continues with either option while pushing people towards the expensive choice.
Cashiers across tourist areas report that most British shoppers are still unaware of this new layer and continue to fall for it.
