Sterling Slumps Despite Record Gilt Yields
The pound sterling (GBP) saw significant losses against the US dollar (USD) on Wednesday, September 2, extending its decline for a second consecutive day. The GBP/USD pair traded as low as 1.3529 after falling from 1.3593, with the dollar index rising to its highest level in over two weeks.
The UK's gilt yields have been increasing, reaching 5.294% on Wednesday, which is a significant rise from the past decade. However, this increase in yields has not supported the pound sterling as one would expect under normal circumstances.
Rising gilt yields are typically associated with growth and policy tightening into strength, but in this case, they signal fiscal stress and imported inflation. The UK's high borrowing costs, coupled with its reliance on imported energy, have led to a significant increase in gilt yields.
