Sterling Stands Firm Amid UK Inflation Surprise

The UK's inflation rate rose to 2.9% in July, exceeding market expectations and keeping investors focused on whether sterling can extend its recent rally.

Sterling held onto gains against the dollar, rising by 0.14% to $1.3552 after the data release, but faces headwinds from higher oil prices and uncertainty over the continuation of its advance.

Economists polled by Reuters widely expected a 2.9% reading, while the Bank of England forecasted a smaller increase to 2.8%, highlighting the divergence in rate expectations between markets and central bank projections.

Ruth Gregory, deputy chief UK economist at Capital Economics, noted that domestically generated inflation remains contained and expects consumer price inflation to fall to 2.0% by the end of next year, provided energy prices do not rise further.
