Stock Market Slumps Amid Rising Oil Prices and Inflation Fears

The US stock market closed lower on Tuesday due to rising oil prices and increasing inflation anxiety. The S&P 500 index fell 0.7%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.8%, and the Nasdaq composite slid 1%. This marks the third consecutive day of losses for major indexes, following a weak start to September.

The major concern is that high oil prices are fueling inflation, which has been above 3% and is expected to remain so. The Federal Reserve may raise interest rates before the year ends to try to bring inflation down to its target rate of 2%. According to CME FedWatch, investors expect a 66% chance of a rate hike at the upcoming September meeting.

The ongoing sell-off in US government bonds has also put pressure on stocks. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.79%, while the yield on the 2-year Treasury increased to 4.39%. Rising yields signal that investors are demanding a higher return from Treasurys due to increasing risk.

The US debt surpassed $40 trillion two weeks ago, highlighting concerns about government spending and interest rates. Higher borrowing costs will weigh down investments and make it difficult for businesses to expand. The global bond sell-off is also contributing to the pressure on stocks.
