Stocks Soar as Basic Materials and Tech Lead Charge
Canada's main stock index, the S&P/TSX composite, surged by over 400 points in late-morning trading on August 4, 2026. The increase was driven primarily by gains in the basic materials and technology sectors.
The S&P/TSX composite index rose to 35,679.86, while the Dow Jones industrial average in New York climbed 757.43 points to 53,935.84. The S&P 500 index also saw significant growth, up 85.88 points at 7,686.38.
The Nasdaq composite was another notable gainer, jumping 405.90 points to 26,319.80. Meanwhile, the Canadian dollar traded for 71.12 cents US, down from 71.28 cents US on Friday.
