Streamers Mock Marie Curie's Appearance on Proposed Euro Banknote Design
The European Central Bank (ECB) is set to introduce new designs for the euro banknotes after 20 years. One of the proposed designs features Marie Curie, a two-time Nobel Prize winner and pioneering physicist and chemist. However, her appearance has been the subject of ridicule from some online streamers.
The ECB unveiled ten possible designs in late July, which are now open to public voting until September 21. The new banknotes aim to incorporate modern security features, improve recognizability, and emphasize environmental sustainability. Two series are being considered: 'European Culture' and 'Rivers and Birds.'
Maria Callas will appear on the five-euro bill as part of the 'Culture' theme, while Ludwig van Beethoven is featured on the ten-euro bill. The 50-euro bill would feature Miguel de Cervantes, with higher denominations showcasing Leonardo da Vinci and Bertha von Suttner.
Marie Curie's depiction has been mocked by some streamers, including Marli and Beraat, who referred to her as an 'ugly giant head' or made jokes about her appearance. However, others have come to her defense, emphasizing her groundbreaking research and achievements in radioactivity.
