Strong Jobs Revive US Dollar Price Forecast Hopes Amid ECB Decision Looms
The US dollar price forecast is gaining momentum as strong jobs data revive bets on a Federal Reserve interest rate hike. Meanwhile, attention has shifted to Thursday's European Central Bank decision, where economists overwhelmingly expect a 25-basis-point increase in the deposit rate to 2.50%. This move comes after eurozone inflation accelerated to 3.3%.
Deutsche Bank is forecasting another increase in December due to sustained energy inflation, which could make the current tightening cycle longer than expected. The euro faces a similar dilemma as it tries to balance inflation and growth. Sterling, too, is struggling with this issue, with Bank of England Chief Economist Huw Pill arguing that raising rates sooner could prevent an Iran-related energy shock from becoming embedded in domestic inflation.
Despite these challenges, the US Dollar Index (DXY) remains neutral-to-bullish, while the euro is moderately bullish. The pound, however, is neutral-to-bullish, with Britain's elevated borrowing costs and fiscal pressures ahead of the October 28 budget remaining a vulnerability for sterling.
