Sudbury Unfazed by Ontario Threats to Cut Off US Critical Minerals

The city of Sudbury in Ontario is not panicking despite threats from Ontario Premier Doug Ford to cut off critical minerals to the United States in response to tariffs. Mayor Paul Lefebvre said the city's key exports, nickel and copper, are not subject to tariffs, and the indirect effects on some suppliers are minimal.

Ford threatened to shut down the flow of critical minerals, including nickel, in retaliation for US President Donald Trump's tariffs on Canadian goods. However, Lefebvre believes that cutting off nickel exports would harm the US more than Canada. 'They need our nickel to continue,' he said. 'They would just be hurting themselves.'

Sudbury is a global mining centre and a major supplier of high-class nickel to the world. The city's economy is diversified, with success in boosting its financial services sector beyond its position as a mining powerhouse.
