Suncorp Warns of Insurance Premium Inflation Outpacing National Average
Australians are paying significantly more for insurance, with premiums rising at nearly double the inflation rate. Suncorp Group's boss, Steve Johnson, said that while the consumer price index rose 3.8% in the year to June 30, insurance inflation is running higher at around 6% or more per year.
Johnson acknowledged that accurately picking inflation was crucial for staying competitive and keeping customers on board, saying 'premiums have now become a very material part of a household budget, so we are very conscious of that.'
Suncorp, the nation's biggest insurer, reported that its total premiums charged in the year to June 30 were $15.42 billion, up 2.7%. However, the company faced significant challenges due to disaster claims, with over 120,000 claims arising from 32 weather events across Australia and New Zealand.
The company's bottom-line net profit nosedived 44% to $1.03 billion as it paid out hundreds of millions of dollars more in claims than expected. Suncorp has acknowledged that increasing transparency is a challenge but is working on designing pathways for customers to better understand insurance premiums and reduce the risk.
