Supercore Services Fuel Unexpected Core Inflation Surge
The US core inflation rate has increased more than expected, according to the August CPI report. Core inflation rose 0.3% month-over-month, surpassing the consensus estimate of 0.2%. The main contributor to this increase was supercore services, which jumped 0.5% in August, more than double the previous month's reading.
Supercore services are a proxy for labor market tightness and tend to follow wage increases. A 0.5% monthly jump in this category signals that underlying wage pressures haven't cooled enough to bring inflation sustainably back to the 2% target. The Fed has been watching supercore closely, as it's a key factor in controlling overall inflation.
The data is likely to influence the Federal Reserve's decision on interest rates at their September 15-16 meeting. Market-implied odds of a rate hike surged to approximately 90% after the release, up from around 70% before. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh has signaled willingness to act if inflation remains elevated.
